What is Height Enlargement Surgery?

Height enlargement surgery is a surgical procedure medically called “limb lengthening” or “statural lengthening” and is generally performed to  increase a person’s height. Although this surgery is generally performed to increase leg length, it can also be performed on the arms.

Basically,  lengthening surgery involves these steps:

• The surgeon makes a cut using a special device, usually at the top or bottom of the leg bone.
• A device is placed in this incision. This device allows the bones to be gradually moved away from each other and new bone tissue to form.
• Depending on the patient’s body weight and genetic factors, some lengthening is done every day. This allows the space between the bones to expand over time and new bone tissue to form.

It is important to note that this type of surgery is a serious decision in your life and has risks. Post-operative pain may include complications and a long recovery period. Additionally, height-enhancing surgeries are generally only recommended for patients with certain medical conditions or serious psychosocial effects due to short stature.

What are the Types of Height Enlargement Surgery?

Lengthening surgeries generally refer to surgical procedures aimed at increasing bone length. These surgeries are usually performed on the long bones in the legs. There are two basic types of lengthening surgery:

• External Fixation: In this method, an incision is made in the leg bone and thenan external fixator is attached to lengthen the bones. This device allows the space between bones to expand over time. In this process, new bone tissue is formed. The patient gradually increases leg length with regular adjustment of the device.
• Internal Fixation: In this method, an incision is made in the leg bone and then the bones are brought closer together and fixed. This method usually uses nails, plates or screws. In this way, bones heal and lengthen. Internal fixation is less visible from the outside than external fixation, and the healing process may be faster.

In both methods, the postoperative period is very important. The patient should be checked regularly after the surgical intervention and follow the instructions of a specialist doctor. The recovery process may vary depending on individual factors, and the patient should pay attention to the post-operative rehabilitation process and attend physical therapy sessions.

Who can undergo height enlargement surgery?

Height enlargement surgery can usually be performed on people who have short stature due to certain medical conditions or anatomical problems. However, this type of surgery is a serious decision and each situation should be evaluated on its own. Here are some situations in which lengthening surgery may be considered:

• Those with genetic or hormonal short stature
• Those suffering from Bone Diseases or Anomalies
• Those with leg length differences as a result of trauma
• It can be applied to people who experience psychosocial effects due to height complex.

It is important to remember that each situation is unique and lengthening
surgery is a serious surgical intervention. People considering this type of surgery
should undergo a detailed evaluation and consultation with a specialist doctor.

How Many Cms Does Height Enlargement Surgery Increase?

Generally, lengthening surgeries start with a few millimeters in each lengthening process. However, as this process is repeated and the space between the bones widens, the amount of elongation increases. In total, the growth achieved in one year can usually vary between 5 and 15 centimeters
